    Topological Fractionation of Resting-State Networks

    Exploring topological properties of human brain network has become an exciting topic in neuroscience research. Large-scale structural and functional brain networks both exhibit a small-world topology, which is evidence for global and local parallel information processing. Meanwhile, resting state networks (RSNs) underlying specific biological functions have provided insights into how intrinsic functional architecture influences cognitive and perceptual information processing. However, topological properties of single RSNs remain poorly understood. Here, we have two hypotheses: i) each RSN also has optimized small-world architecture; ii) topological properties of RSNs related to perceptual and higher cognitive processes are different. To test these hypotheses, we investigated the topological properties of the default-mode, dorsal attention, central-executive, somato-motor, visual and auditory networks derived from resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We found small-world topology in each RSN. Furthermore, small-world properties of cognitive networks were higher than those of perceptual networks. Our findings are the first to demonstrate a topological fractionation between perceptual and higher cognitive networks. Our approach may be useful for clinical research, especially for diseases that show selective abnormal connectivity in specific brain networks

    Brazilein from Caesalpinia sappan

    Brazilein, a natural, biologically active compound from Caesalpinia sappan L., has been shown to exhibit anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and to inhibit the growth of several cancer cells. This study verifies the antioxidant and antitumor characteristics of brazilein in skin cancer cells and is the first time to elucidate the inhibition mechanism of adipocyte differentiation, cestocidal activities against Hymenolepis nana, and reduction of spontaneous movement in Anisakis simplex. Brazilein exhibits an antioxidant capacity as well as the ability to scavenge DPPH• and ABTS•+ free radicals and to inhibit lipid peroxidation. Brazilein inhibited intracellular lipid accumulation during adipocyte differentiation in 3T3-L1 cells and suppressed the induction of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ), the master regulator of adipogenesis, suggesting that brazilein presents the antiobesity effects. The toxic effects of brazilein were evaluated in terms of cell viability, induction of apoptosis, and the activity of caspase-3 in BCC cells. The inhibition of the growth of skin cancer cells (A431, BCC, and SCC25) by brazilein is greater than that of human skin malignant melanoma (A375) cells, mouse leukemic monocyte macrophage (RAW 264.7 cells), and noncancerous cells (HaCaT and BNLCL2 cells).     Partial Wave Analysis of J/ψ→γ(K+K−π+π−)J/\psi \to \gamma (K^+K^-\pi^+\pi^-)

    BES data on J/ψ→γ(K+K−π+π−)J/\psi \to \gamma (K^+K^-\pi^+\pi^-) are presented. The K∗Kˉ∗K^*\bar K^* contribution peaks strongly near threshold. It is fitted with a broad 0−+0^{-+} resonance with mass M=1800±100M = 1800 \pm 100 MeV, width Γ=500±200\Gamma = 500 \pm 200 MeV. A broad 2++2^{++} resonance peaking at 2020 MeV is also required with width ∼500\sim 500 MeV. There is further evidence for a 2−+2^{-+} component peaking at 2.55 GeV. The non-K∗Kˉ∗K^*\bar K^* contribution is close to phase space; it peaks at 2.6 GeV and is very different from K∗K∗ˉK^{*}\bar{K^{*}}.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, Submitted to PL

    Measurement of the Inclusive Charm Cross Section at 4.03 GeV and 4.14 GeV

    The cross section for charmed meson production at s=4.03\sqrt{s} = 4.03 and 4.14 GeV has been measured with the Beijing Spectrometer. The measurement was made using 22.3 pb−1pb^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- data collected at 4.03 GeV and 1.5 pb−1pb^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- data collected at 4.14 GeV. Inclusive observed cross sections for the production of charged and neutral D mesons and momentum spectra are presented. Observed cross sections were radiatively corrected to obtain tree level cross sections. Measurements of the total hadronic cross section are obtained from the charmed meson cross section and an extrapolation of results from below the charm threshold.Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures.     Measurement of the Total Cross Section for Hadronic Production by e+e- Annihilation at Energies between 2.6-5 Gev

    Using the upgraded Beijing Spectrometer (BESII), we have measured the total cross section for e+e−e^+e^- annihilation into hadronic final states at center-of-mass energies of 2.6, 3.2, 3.4, 3.55, 4.6 and 5.0 GeV. Values of RR, σ(e+e−→hadrons)/σ(e+e−→μ+μ−)\sigma(e^+e^-\to {hadrons})/\sigma(e^+e^-\to\mu^+\mu^-), are determined.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. Let

    Measurement of ψ(2S)\psi(2S) decays to baryon pairs

    A sample of 3.95M ψ(2S)\psi(2S) decays registered in the BES detector are used to study final states containing pairs of octet and decuplet baryons. We report branching fractions for ψ(2S)→ppˉ\psi(2S)\to p\bar{p}, ΛΛˉ\Lambda\bar{\Lambda}, Σ0Σˉ0\Sigma^0\bar{\Sigma}{}^0, Ξ−Ξˉ+\Xi^-\bar{\Xi}{}^+, Δ++Δˉ−−\Delta^{++}\bar{\Delta}{}^{--}, Σ+(1385)Σˉ−(1385)\Sigma^+(1385)\bar{\Sigma}{}^-(1385), Ξ0(1530)Ξˉ0(1530)\Xi^0(1530)\bar{\Xi}{}^0(1530), and Ω−Ωˉ+\Omega^-\bar{\Omega}{}^+. These results are compared to expectations based on the SU(3)-flavor symmetry, factorization, and perturbative QCD.Comment: 22 pages, 21 figures, 4 table

    Search for Gravitational Waves Associated with 39 Gamma-Ray Bursts Using Data from the Second, Third, and Fourth LIGO Runs

    We present the results of a search for short-duration gravitational-wave bursts associated with 39 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected by gamma-ray satellite experiments during LIGO's S2, S3, and S4 science runs. The search involves calculating the crosscorrelation between two interferometer data streams surrounding the GRB trigger time. We search for associated gravitational radiation from single GRBs, and also apply statistical tests to search for a gravitational-wave signature associated with the whole sample. For the sample examined, we find no evidence for the association of gravitational radiation with GRBs, either on a single-GRB basis or on a statistical basis. Simulating gravitational-wave bursts with sine-gaussian waveforms, we set upper limits on the root-sum-square of the gravitational-wave strain amplitude of such waveforms at the times of the GRB triggers. We also demonstrate how a sample of several GRBs can be used collectively to set constraints on population models. The small number of GRBs and the significant change in sensitivity of the detectors over the three runs, however, limits the usefulness of a population study for the S2, S3, and S4 runs. Finally, we discuss prospects for the search sensitivity for the ongoing S5 run, and beyond for the next generation of detectors.Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures, 14 tables; minor changes to text and Fig. 2; accepted by Phys.     Study of the Hadronic Decays of \chi_c States

    Hadronic decays of the P-wave spin-triplet charmonium states \chi_cJ (J=0,1,2) are studied using a sample of \psi(2S) decays collected by the BES detector operating at the BEPC storage ring. Branching fractions for the decays \chi_c1 going to K_s^0 K^+ \pi^- + c.c., \chi_c0 going to K_s^0 K_s^0, \chi_c2 going to K_s^0 K_s^0, \chi_c0 going to \phi \phi, \chi_c2 going to \phi \phi and \chi_cJ going to K^+ K^- K^+ K^- are measured for the first time, and those for \chi_cJ going to \pi^+ \pi^- \pi^+ \pi^-, $ \chi_cJ going to \pi^+ \pi^- K^+ K^-, \chi_cJ going to \pi^+ \pi^- p \bar{p} and \chi_cJ going to 3(\pi^+ \pi^-) are measured with improved precision. In addition, we determine the masses of the \chi_c0 and \eta_c to be M_{\chi_{c0}}=3414.1 \pm 0.6(stat) \pm 0.8 (sys) MeV and M_{\eta_c}=2975.8 \pm 3.9(stat) \pm 1.2 (sys) MeV.Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures, 6 tables, use revtex, submitted to Phys.
